About psst, JAPAN

Past the guidebook, into the real Japan — told straight, with respect.
psst, JAPAN is like having a friend in Japan who quietly explains things for you. We're locals. You won't see our faces or influencer selfies here — just clear, checked answers to the questions no sign answers: why that curtain hangs in the doorway, what the little stone on the path means, when to take your shoes off and where to put them.
Our logo is a noren, the cloth curtain that hangs in the doorway of a noodle shop or a bathhouse. Look closely and there's a dot peeking through the gap. The dot is you. Stepping through a noren is a small thing, but it marks the moment you stop being outside, looking in.
Vision — Every traveler, through the curtain. We'd like every visitor to Japan to get past the surface at least once: to understand a place well enough to feel at ease in it, and to be welcome there.
What we value
- Discover. We start with the everyday things you'll walk past a hundred times — a step, a screen, a pattern of gravel — and show you what's behind them.
- Real. No hype, no guesswork. If a story is a legend, we say it's a legend. If we can't stand behind a claim, it doesn't go on the page.
- Respect. Japan is not a theme park; people live and work in the places you'll visit. We point you to public places, not quiet residential streets, and we tell you the manners that keep doors open for the next traveler.
The ZUKAN is our field guide: one word, one idea, one thing to look for. Read an entry before you go, and you'll notice it everywhere once you arrive.
psst — the curtain's already open. Come in.
