Takayama

Old merchant lanes in the mountains.

Takayama is a mountain town in the Hida region, with dark wooden merchant houses, sake breweries and two morning markets. Its spring and autumn festivals bring out giant decorated floats. The old town is small and flat, so it is easy to explore on foot. Many travelers pair it with Shirakawa-go, about 50 minutes away by bus. Evenings are quiet, which is part of the charm.

Best time: The festivals on April 14–15 and October 9–10, or late October to early November for autumn color. Winter is cold but beautiful in snow.
