Otaru

A small canal port with glass shops and sushi.

Why Japanese travelers love itIt is the classic romantic side trip from Sapporo, with an old-port mood and fresh sushi.

Otaru was once a busy trading port, and its stone warehouses still line the canal. Today they hold cafés, glass workshops and music box shops. Sushi counters cluster near the station. It is an easy half-day or day trip from Sapporo, about 30 minutes by rapid train. Come in the evening, when the canal lamps come on, or in winter, when snow lanterns light the streets.

Best time: Summer for easy walking, or February for the snow-lantern evenings. Avoid midday on weekends if you dislike crowds.
