Naoshima
An art island in the Seto Inland Sea.
Why Japanese travelers love itArt, sea and island time in one trip, and the museums feel calm and unhurried.
Naoshima is a small fishing island turned into a home for contemporary art. The Chichu Art Museum is built into a hill and lit by daylight. Old houses in Honmura became art works, and Yayoi Kusama's pumpkin sits by the sea. The Naoshima New Museum of Art opened in 2025. Teshima, next door, has another striking museum. Book timed tickets ahead.
Best time: Spring and autumn. Check closures: many museums close on Mondays, and Chichu is closed for maintenance from January 12 to March 19, 2027.
