Miyakojima
Powder-white beaches and long bridges over blue water.
Why Japanese travelers love itThe 'Miyako blue' water and the drives over the bridges are the dream beach trip.
Miyakojima is a flat island known for some of Japan's clearest water. Yonaha Maehama is a long stretch of powder-white sand. Bridges connect it to smaller islands like Irabu, Ikema and Kurima, and driving across them is half the fun. Snorkeling is easy from many beaches. There are no trains, so rent a car.
Best time: Late June to October for the sea, though typhoons are possible. Spring is pleasant and quieter.
