Matsushima
A calm bay of pine-covered islands.
Why Japanese travelers love itIt is one of the 'Three Views of Japan', and an oyster lunch by the bay is part of the trip.
Matsushima Bay is dotted with small islands topped with pine trees. It is counted among Japan's three classic scenic views. Take a 50-minute bay cruise, then walk to Zuiganji Temple and the little Godaido hall on its own island. The town is small and easy on foot. It works well as a half-day trip from Sendai, or as a quiet overnight stay by the water.
Best time: Spring and autumn for mild weather. Zuiganji holds autumn night visits; in 2026 they run October 30 to November 23.
Weather
Average temperature, °C. JMA 1991–2020 normals (Sendai (JMA), about 20 km away).
