Ishigaki

Coral reefs and the gateway to the Yaeyama islands.

Why Japanese travelers love itIt is the base for island-hopping in Yaeyama, with Ishigaki beef and reef diving.

Ishigaki is Japan's southernmost city, about 2,000 km from Tokyo. It has coral reefs, mountain viewpoints and calm bays like Kabira. Divers come to see manta rays in summer. Ferries go from the port to Taketomi's old village and to Iriomote's jungle. Most sights are within an hour's drive, so a rental car is the easy choice.

Best time: Spring to autumn for the sea; summer brings mantas and typhoon risk. Winter is mild but windy.
