Lost and found

Things that go missing in Japan often turn up. Report it fast, and in person.

What to know

  • Start with the place you lost it: the train company, bus operator, taxi firm, shop or hotel. They may hold items for a few days before passing them to the police.
  • Then file a lost property report in person at any police station or koban (police box). Reports can't be made by email. You can fill in the form in advance, but you still have to hand it in yourself.
  • In Tokyo, the police Lost and Found Center is on 0570-550-142. Its online search of found items is in Japanese only.
  • Tokyo collection hours are 8:30–16:30, Monday to Friday, closed on national holidays and from December 29 to January 3.
  • To collect, bring your passport or other ID, the item's reference number, and the notification letter if you received one.
  • Already left Japan? Someone else can collect for you with their own ID, a copy of yours, a letter of authorization and the reference number. Items can only be shipped to an address in Japan, at your cost.
  • Items lost outside Japan can't be reported here.
  • The Japan Visitor Hotline (050-3816-2787) can help 24 hours a day.

psst, before you leave a train, note the line, the car number and the time. With those three, staff can usually find what you left.
