Entry & exit
Visas and entry
Many passports get you in without a visa, but the answer depends on yours. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has the final word.
What to know
- Japan has visa exemption arrangements with a list of countries and regions. If yours isn't on the list, you need a visa before you travel.
- Visas can't be issued on arrival or while you're in Japan. Apply through the Japanese embassy or consulate that covers where you live, an accredited agency, a visa application center, or online where that mission allows it.
- Eligible residents of Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, the UK and the US can apply online for a single-entry tourist eVISA.
- Processing takes about a week when everything is in order. Extra documents can be requested, and that takes longer.
- A visa doesn't guarantee entry. The immigration officer at the airport decides.
- Foreign visitors are fingerprinted and photographed at immigration. Children under 16 are among the groups that are exempt.
- The ministry warns about fake websites, social media accounts and emails that ask visa applicants for money. Use official channels only.
- Questions about your situation go to MOFA's visa information line: 0570-011000, or +81-3-5369-6577 from overseas. Weekdays, 9:00–17:00, Japan time.
psst, rules change, and only the page for your passport counts. Check it when you book, and again the week before you fly.
