Plugs and voltage
Japan runs on 100 volts. Most phone and laptop chargers don't care. Hair dryers might.
What to know
- The voltage is 100 V AC everywhere in Japan.
- The frequency is 50 Hz in eastern Japan and 60 Hz in western Japan, including Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka.
- Dual-voltage devices, such as many hair dryers, travel irons and shavers, should work anywhere. Check the label on your charger for a range like "100–240V".
- Devices built only for higher voltages need a step-down transformer, not just a plug adapter.
- Adapters and converters are easy to find in the cities. Try the electronics districts of Akihabara in Tokyo and Nipponbashi in Osaka, or big stores like Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera.
- Newer shinkansen have power outlets at window seats. Ask for a window seat when you buy your ticket.
- Some hamburger chains and family restaurants have outlets you can use.
psst, pack one adapter with several USB ports rather than several adapters. Hotel rooms rarely have outlets where you want them.
