What to know
- The International Tourist Tax is a flat charge on travelers departing Japan. It went up from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 on July 1, 2026.
- It's charged once per departure. It isn't a nightly charge, and it's separate from the accommodation taxes some cities add to hotel bills.
- In the vast majority of cases, the airline or ferry line adds it to your ticket when you buy it, so there's nothing to pay at the airport.
- It's also separate from tax-free shopping. The consumption tax refund on your purchases works on its own system.
- Exemptions and special cases are set by Japan's National Tax Agency. If you think one applies to you, check there rather than with the airline desk at departure.
psst, look for it in the tax breakdown on your booking receipt. If it's listed, you're done.
