Accommodation tax
Some cities add a small tax per person, per night. It's set locally, so it varies by where you sleep.
What to know
- Accommodation tax is set by each city or prefecture, not nationally. Rates and rules differ, and many places don't charge one at all.
- Kyoto City, from March 1, 2026, per person per night, by room rate:
- under ¥6,000: ¥200
- ¥6,000–19,999: ¥400
- ¥20,000–49,999: ¥1,000
- ¥50,000–99,999: ¥4,000
- ¥100,000 or more: ¥10,000
- In Kyoto the room rate is the room plus service charges, excluding meals and consumption tax. You pay at the property, unless you already paid it through a booking site or travel agency.
- Tokyo, per person per night: rooms under ¥10,000 are exempt, ¥10,000–14,999 pays ¥100, and ¥15,000 or more pays ¥200. Tokyo has proposed switching to a percentage-based tax of 3%, so check the current rule before you book.
- It's separate from the ¥3,000 departure tax and from consumption tax.
psst, in Kyoto the jump from ¥1,000 to ¥4,000 happens at ¥50,000 per person. If you're right at the line, it's worth comparing rates.
