Emergency numbers

CallFor
110Police — crime, accidents, theft
119Fire and ambulance

110 for police. 119 for fire or an ambulance. One more number for everything in between.

What to know

  • 110: police.
  • 119: fire and ambulance. The call is free, and so is the ambulance. Hospital treatment is not.
  • Some phones brought from overseas may not connect to Japanese emergency lines. If yours won't, use a public phone or ask someone nearby to call.
  • Some fire departments connect a three-way call with an interpreter in English, Chinese, Korean and other languages. It can take several tens of seconds to connect, so stay on the line. It isn't available everywhere.
  • Japan Visitor Hotline: 050-3816-2787, or +81-50-3816-2787 from overseas. Run by the Japan National Tourism Organization, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in English, Chinese and Korean. Call it for accidents, illness, natural disasters or general travel help.
  • Police general information (English available): 03-3503-8484.
  • Police lost and found: 0570-550-142.
  • In Tokyo, the fire department's #7119 line helps you decide whether you need a hospital or an ambulance.

psst, save the hotline number in your phone before you land, under a name you'll find in a hurry, such as "Japan help".
