Fukuoka
An easy, friendly food city by the sea.
Fukuoka is one of Japan's most livable big cities, compact and close to the sea. Its open-air yatai stalls serve ramen and grilled skewers at night along the river in Nakasu and in Tenjin. Hakata is the old merchant side, with shrines and craft traditions. The airport is just minutes from the center, so it makes a smooth start or end to a Kyushu trip.
Best time: Late March for cherry blossoms, or October and November. June and July are rainy.
